On 1 October 2026, Emerson announced the release of the Rosemount™ QX1400 Continuous Gas Analyzer, intended for natural gas quality monitoring, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) and other demanding applications. Emerson describes it as the world’s first hybrid gas analyzer certified for hazardous areas.
What was announced
- The QX1400 uses the same hybrid measurement technologies as the Rosemount™ QX1000: paramagnetic detection for O2 and quantum cascade laser direct absorption spectroscopy for the other gases.
- Stated certifications are ATEX II 2G Ex d IIB H2 T4 for Europe and IECEx Ex db IIB+H2 T4 Gb for the rest of the world. Emerson expects North American certification (Class 1, Division 2, Groups B, C, D, T4) by the end of 2026.
- Off the shelf, it supports CO, CO2, O2, NO, NO2 and SO2, with configurations typically measuring one to four gases. CH4 and N2O measurement is also available.
- According to Emerson, the certifications allow installation in certain hazardous areas without additional protective measures such as purged enclosures, and in some applications closer to the sampling point.
Why it matters for gas measurement projects
Emerson highlights O2 measurement in LNG, carbon capture and storage, ethylene purity and hydrogen purity applications, many of which sit in hazardous areas. Combining two measurement principles in one certified platform shows how sensing principle, target gases and installation zone have to be considered together when a measurement system is specified.
Airgreen’s perspective
Our core technical team has 20 years of experience in gas sensor design and R&D, and supports sensor integration, PCB and circuit design, microcontroller programming and customised enclosures. For engineers developing their own monitoring equipment, we recommend matching the sensing principle to each target gas, range and environment first, and treating hazardous-area approval of the finished equipment as a separate, system-level requirement.
